DIY Slime: A Project Oozing With Fun

DIY Slime with Borax

Slime is not only fun to hold and squeeze, but it’s so much fun to experiment with as well! Whether you’re in the mood for something glow in the dark or a project reminiscent of your favorite Flubber movie, this list of slime recipes is for you!

*WARNING* These crafts contain Borax which can burn your skin if you are not careful. Dilute the borax in water and only add tablespoons at a time. Ask an adult for help.

What is Borax? A common household chemical that resembles soft crystals and white powder.

1. Bubblegum Slime

This classic bubblegum slime is squishy and firm at the same time. Also, since this project calls for shaving cream, this slime will eventually deflate.

Nevertheless, it’ll still give you an enjoyable afternoon of playtime!

What You’ll Do:

  1. Work with a ratio of 2 parts glue to 1 part shaving cream. Mix both ingredients together.
  2. Add a few pumps of foam hand soap and your activator — a mixture of water and Borax or contact lens solution.
  3. Mix and knead the slime. Add more activator for a smoother and fluffier consistency.

2. Glow in the Dark Slime

This easy DIY slime project will keep your kids occupied even during the dark.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Pour white Elmer’s glue into a bowl.
  2. Add food coloring and glow in the dark paint to your glue mixture.
  3. Place a teaspoon of Borax and half a cup of warm water in a separate bowl. Mix well.
  4. Mix and knead the two mixtures together.

Tip: You can also choose to make this slime with glitter glue. Just note, you may end up with a more milky and less see-through consistency.

Also, for better results, pour warm water into the glue bottle, put the cap on, then shake. You'll soon find it easier to pour out every last drop.

3. Finding Dory Glitter Slime

This slime would be a great party favor for a Finding Dory kid's party. You can even make a little display where the Finding Dory characters are placed on top of the slime.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Mix a bottle of glitter glue and 1 tablespoon of water together.
  2. In a separate bowl, make a Borax mixture — 1 teaspoon of Borax and 1 cup of warm water.
  3. Combine the two mixtures and stir well.
  4. Once the slime starts to form, remove the water and continue kneading the slime with your hands. By the way, if you need to stiffen the slime further, simply dip it in the water for a few seconds.

4. Cheese Slime

Get your yellow food coloring ready to make a batch of this cheese slime.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Combine your activator with soap, glue, cornstarch, and food coloring. Mix well.
  2. Add a few tablespoons of water to make the slime harder.
  3. Gather the slime into a ball and knead it to help incorporate air into the slime.

Tip: Remember, when it comes to food coloring, a few drops will go a long way.

5. Cornstarch Slime

Make cornstarch slime with just 3 ingredients: water, cornstarch, and food coloring. Did I mention you’d probably already have these ingredients in your kitchen?

What You’ll Do:

  1. Using your hands, mix together equal parts of water and cornstarch.
  2. Once you have a slimy and smooth consistency, add a few drops of your food coloring.
  3. Mix well and enjoy.

6. Slime Smoothie

This slime smoothie DIY is as easy as pie! Essentially, it’s really just a mixture of different colors and types of slimes.

It’ll make for a great color lesson too.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Place your different variants of slime in a bowl.
  2. Knead until everything is fully mixed.

7. Floam Slime

Do you have a bean bag that’s recently split open? Don’t discard the polystyrene balls.

You can turn them into floam slime with the help of this tutorial.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Mix half a cup of glue and a few drops of food coloring in a bowl.
  2. Add in half a cup of liquid starch, mix and then knead the mixture with your hands. You may add starch if it ends up being too sticky.
  3. Add the polystyrene balls and mix until everything is fully incorporated.

8. Scented Slime

Give your kids a lesson in scents with this DIY slime project.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Make a mixture of 1 teaspoon of Borax and 1 cup of water.
  2. In another bowl, mix together a bottle of scented glitter glue with half a cup of water. Stir until completely mixed.
  3. Add your food coloring to the glitter glue mixture. Mix well.
  4. Add in the Borax mixture and mix until you reach the consistency of slime.
  5. Drain the excess water.
  6. To store, place the slime in an airtight container or a plastic bag.

Tip: Save yourself the hassle of adding scents in by simply using scented glitter glue instead.

9. Flubber

The main difference of flubber from regular slime is that it's easier to handle as it isn’t as viscous or slimy. Either way, it’s still really fun to squish!

What You’ll Do:

  1. Combine glue, cold water, and food coloring in a bowl.
  2. In another bowl, make a mixture of Borax and water.
  3. Slowly add the glue mixture to the Borax mixture. Mix and then drain the water.

10. Metallic Slime

This is my favorite kind of slime because the metallic color looks so divine and chic. If you’re feeling cheeky with the kids, you could even hide a few of their small toys in the slime for them to discover while they play.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Combine clear glue and a preferred hue of watercolor in a bowl. Mix well.
  2. Add 1/4 of liquid starch to the mixture and stir. Don't forget to shake the bottle of the liquid starch first.
  3. Once fully mixed, add in 1/8 cup of liquid starch and stir.
  4. Finally, add the remainder of the liquid starch and stir.
  5. Knead the slime until it reaches a slime-like consistency.

11. Clear Confetti Slime

Clear slime makes for a great base when it comes to customizing your slime. With it, you can add all sorts of confetti and other accents such as glitter and sequins.

What You'll Do:

  1. Pour 1 tbsp of glue into a bowl. Set this aside.
  2. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of Borax with 1 1/2 tsp of water. Mix well.
  3. Combine the glue and Borax mixtures. Mix until a clear slime forms. You may add more water as needed.
  4. Add in the accents of confetti or glitter. Then knead the slime with your hands to combine and spread the confetti.

12. Unicorn Slime

Your kids will love all the colors swirled into this unicorn slime! Make your kids even more intrigued by telling them the slime is unicorn poop!

What You'll Do:

  1. Divide your glue into different cups. Then, add a tbsp of water in each cup.
  2. Add a few drops of food coloring in the cups and mix. I recommend using pastel colors of pink, yellow, green, and blue. Don't forget to use only one color per cup.
  3. In a separate cup, make your Borax mixture.
  4. Distribute the Borax mixture into your colored cups and mix.
  5. Once the slime has turned thick, start kneading with your hands.
  6. Store the slime in a plastic bag and leave it in your refrigerator.
  7. Braid the different colors of slime once cooled.

In my opinion, the feeling of squishing DIY slime is just as great as the feeling of squishing sand in between the toes. DIY slime is for everyone — both kids and adults alike.

After all, sometimes we’re just children at heart, right?
