Sweetest Day Candy Gift Ideas Celebrate Sweetest Day With These 10 DIY Gift Ideas

Most residents outside of the Midwest have no idea what Sweetest Day is. Being born and raised in Wisconsin, I have always celebrated Sweetest Day. I will find any excuse to celebrate a holiday, mostly because I love giving gifts and baking sweet treats. I also love eating said treats after baking them. It’s a win/win for everyone.

So for those of you not raised in the Midwest, Sweetest Day is an American holiday observed on the third Saturday in October. Sweetest Day is similar to Valentines Day, but it is celebrated on a much lower scale. A low-key Valentine's Day if you will.

A Little History:

The holiday was not initially intended for sweethearts; instead it was created for a very different reason. In 1922, Herbert Birch Kingston, an Ohio candy employee, wanted to help those less fortunate than him. Kingston and his friends delivered boxes of candy throughout Cleveland, Ohio to anyone that was down on their luck.

The holiday gained popularity in the 1930s with the help of some celebrities. Ann Pennington and Theda Bara, movie stars at that time, distributed candy on a very large scale to people in need.

It is still fitting to give loved ones a little gift of candy on October 15th, 2016 (this year’s Sweetest Day). The good news is, you don’t have to live in the Midwest to celebrate Sweetest Day! Simply make a nice homemade card & buy your sweetest their favorite candy! That is the perfect Sweetest Day gift in my opinion.

Small gifts and cards should be given to any person you care about whose relationship matters to you. Don’t sit this holiday out! Celebrate your loved ones on October 15th and every Sweetest Day after that!
