I read all the top DIY tutorials on how to make lotion, and  I was actually a little bit skeptical when I first decided to try a homemade recipe for lotion. I couldn’t imagine why I really would want to go to the trouble to make lotion, especially when I read a few different ways to make it, and all the problems you could encounter with the different recipes. However, I had heard good things about homemade lotions, and I was determined to try it out and see if I could not master this one.  Some of the sites I found had recipes that sounded difficult, and even clearly stated that it was easy to mess it up. I certainly did not want to be wasting the ingredients and my time on something I could not even use.

After doing all this research on lotion making, I also read that one of the benefits of making your own lotion is that you eliminate the risk of all kinds of unknown chemicals in your lotion. I was truly surprised when I found out what goes in some of the lotions I was using at home. I encourage you to read the labels of yours and do some research there. You may no longer want to be putting the stuff you thought was safe on yourself or your children. I certainly do not.

I am happy to say I have now made over fifteen batches of homemade lotion, and they all turned out great. This is one of my favorites, as it has lavender in it, which is known for its calming properties. I love to add extra lavender oil to mine, something you can not find in store bought lotions. The extra lavender really makes a difference. The amount of essential oil is completely up to you. I do not think you can really add too much.

Lavender is a natural scent that is known for its anti-anxiety properties and ability to promote relaxation, so a calming lavender lotion is perfect to lather on before you go to bed.

If you love this recipe, be sure to make it again with another essential oil you love. Have a recipe for lotion you like? I would love to try it out. Have feedback on this lotion recipe? We would love to hear that as well. Please share it with us in the comments section below.

Step 2:

Now let’s make sure the consistency is how we want it. To do this, grab your electric beater (you could use a hand held whisk if you prefer) and use it to whip the lotion mixture for about 10 minutes. This will help the coconut oil remain whipped even at room temperature.

How To Make Lotion: After you melt all your ingredients, you may think your lotion does not look right. When it cools, it will. You need to whip it with an electric mixer or at least shake it vigorously in a jar as it cools so it will remain the right consistency.

Step 3:

Poor it in a jar of your choice and enjoy! Homemade lotions are good for a couple of months.
