6 Home Remedies for Sunburn
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has many uses and sunburn treatment is one of them. Some people use it straight, some dilute it in lukewarm water. (Straight vinegar may sting a little because of its acetic acid.) Apply gently with a cotton ball or lay a soft washcloth soaked in the solution on the area. Apply on the hour as needed.
2. Aloe Vera | Home Remedies for Sunburn
Aloe Vera is a trusted skin soother and moisturizer, and also acts as an herbal antibiotic. Long recommended as a treatment for burns from other sources, it works just as well on sunburns. If you have an aloe plant, simply clip off a leaf and slice lengthwise to extract the gel and apply gently to the affected area. You can also juice the leaves if you have a juicer available.
3. Baking Soda
Baking soda helps soothe skin inflammation, irritation and itchiness caused by sunburn. It has a cooling effect on the skin due to its alkaline nature. For more details on how to apply, click here.
4. Coconut Oil
I’m sure you’ve been hearing lately about the many uses for coconut oil. Welll, here's one more: coconut oil is a great DIY home remedy for sunburn. Coconut oil contains fatty acids that reduce swelling, moisturize and help prevent peeling. Coconut oil can also be used as a sunscreen and after sun treatment. Simply apply to sunburned areas or all over for a soothing and moisturizing treatment.
5. Honey | Home Remedies for Sunburn
For ages honey has been used to treat burns and wounds. It’s anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties make it a perfect natural antibiotic. But you can also use honey to treat sunburns. Honey decreases inflammation, seals in moisture and promotes healing. Local raw honey or manuka honey are great choices for using honey to treat sunburns. Simply apply to the affected area and cover with gauze if you don’t want to be a sticky mess. Honey may not be the best option for treating large areas because it can be quite messy.
6. Potato Paste
When your skin is searing hot, root up a few potatoes. Potatoes are great for alleviating minor skin irritations and soothing scratches, bites, and burns as well as possibly reducing inflammation. Some people feel that the juice of the potato works the best, while others feel slices are sufficient. Try both and see which one is the best remedy for your sunburn.
