11 DIY Plant Stand Ideas Fit for Every Plant Parent

1. Book Stack Plant Stand

Repurpose some old books and turn them into a fuss-free plant stand. You can choose to leave the book covers as is (especially if the covers match the aesthetic you’re going for), or paint the covers into cute colors before stacking them together.

For extra stability, stick some glue on your book covers.

2. Trash Can Stand

Turn that regular metal mesh trash can into a work of art that can also serve as a little stand for your plants. Flip the can upside down and wrap some fabric trim around until it covers the entire can. Flipping two wire wastebaskets base-to-base gives you that airy, high-end geometric stand without the boutique price tag. I always grab this rigid white set because they don’t warp under the weight of a top tray.

3. Tiered Plant Stand

This tiered plant stand is perfect for showing off your smaller plants. It’s also perfect for making use of all the scrap wood that has accumulated in your workshop.

It’s so simple, even a beginner can pick it up once you have all the tools needed and ready to go. To replicate that clean, curated look on a ladder shelf, you need crisp geometric planters that protect the raw wood. I love this ceramic set because it includes built-in drainage holes and matching bamboo saucers to catch drips.

4. Rolling Caddy

Tired of having to carry your giant plants when you need to move them? This rolling plant caddy is just for you.

Just add some caster wheels to a slab of wood, and you’re good to go. Moving plants around will be such a breeze once you finish this plant stand.

5. DIY Drawer Plant Stand

Old drawers can make for ridiculously cute plant holders. Paint the drawer a cute color of your choice and mount a folding tray table at the bottom with some wood glue and a few screws.

6. Window Plant Shelf

A window shelf makes for an aesthetically pleasing way to make sure your plants get a healthy dose of sunlight. We recommend using acrylic as it’s a lightweight material that’s much safer and easier to clean than glass.

7. Macrame Plant Hanger

If acrylic’s a little too involved for your needs (or you’re renting and can’t really drill holes), a macrame shelf is a much easier way to get some light to your plants. With a few basic macrame knots, you can create a shelf that can easily hold all your tiny pots on top of it.

8. Copper Plant Stand

Copper piping lends to a nice mid-modern look that suits a variety of home aesthetics. Glue some pipings together and let it sit overnight before inserting your plant pots inside.

Note: Make sure to be careful when measuring the diameter of your desired plant stand as the cost can easily add up if you make a mistake.

9. DIY Concrete Plant Stand

Poured concrete can add a surprisingly elegant touch to your plant décor. Look for a mold that fits the pot you want to put on top of the stand, pour the concrete, and wait for it to harden before painting with your desired color. Standard concrete leaves rough, gravelly edges, so you need a fine-aggregate mix to achieve that silky, modern stone finish. This rapid-setting compound is my favorite for pulling flawlessly smooth, sharp-angled planters from a mold.

10. Corner Shelf

A corner shelf plant stand doesn’t take a lot of space compared to other options and adds a touch of charm to an otherwise bare corner. It’s so simple and only requires a few tools you will probably have lying around the house.

11. Wash Tub Stand

Repurpose a vintage washtub and turn it into a lovely plant home. You can leave it as-is for a rustic look, or paint it a cute color to match the rest of your décor.

You can never go wrong with any of these one-of-a-kind DIY plant stand ideas. Whether it’s that little corner in your living room or right by the front porch, any of these will surely be conversation starters.
