Pros of doing your own DIY wedding makeup:

(You've been doing your makeup all of these years and it just doesn’t seem right to pay someone else to brush on the bronzer and create pouty lips. DIY wedding makeup allows you to take all the time you want dabbling in various color combinations and techniques.)

  • You know how you want to look, so there is no chance of miscommunication with your makeup artist.
  • You’ll look and feel like yourself because you’ll look much like you always do.
  • It can save significant money, if you already own the makeup you will use.

Cons of doing your own DIY wedding makeup:

(Yeah, you've been doing your makeup all along, but you can't quite recall the last time you actually got a compliment on your lip liner and eye shadow skills. Since your wedding is one of the most important days in your life, you may want every detail professionally in place.)

  • You may not photograph at your best, as you may be unaware of the interactions that can occur between makeup and flash photography.
  • Doing your own makeup may be more expensive than hiring a makeup artist, depending on the makeup you already own/need to purchase.
  • DIY makeup may not be as long lasting, depending on the makeup you use.
  • If you have a specific technical or special look you want to achieve, you may not have the skills to pull it off effectively.
  • You may feel quite stressed on the morning of your wedding, and doing your own makeup may increase that stress.
  • If you mess up your makeup, you may not have the skills to adequately fix it. Red lips, smoky eyes and winged eyeliner are all popular wedding looks. They're also notorious for going wrong.
  • Will you be doing the makeup for your entire bridal party as well? Will they be doing it themselves? What happens if they lack makeup application confidence, skill, or appropriate makeup colors (particularly foundation/concealer)

Advice for doing your own wedding day makeup:

  • Practice, practice and practice some more.
  • When you think you’ve practiced enough, practice a little bit more.
  • When you’ve applied your practice makeup, take some photos of it, inside, outside, at daytime and at night (especially using harsh flash photography). This can help to alert you if your makeup is going to strobe/flash back at you and look strange in your photos.
  • When you’ve applied your practice makeup, wear it for a whole day, preferably where you will be talking a lot, eating, drinking and doing some light exercise. This can give you an indication of how your makeup will hold up on your long wedding day. This will let you know if you need to change any of your existing products for longer-lasting options.
  • Avoid using shimmery, glittery or “glowy” products. What looks beautiful in person can often look sweaty or greasy in photos. Unless you are absolutely confident in your knowledge of facial anatomy and the practical application of facial highlighting, don’t risk it.
