How To Make Your Own Potpourri From Scratch
What You Need:
- Orange
- Apple
- Lemon
- Bay leaves
- Whole cloves
- Cinnamon (ground or sticks)
- Orange essential oil
- A wire rack
1. Preheat Your Oven and Slice Your Fruits

Preheat your oven to the lowest setting you can set it to (usually 200 F). If your oven has a “dehydrate” setting (which can go even lower), set it as such.
While your oven’s heating up, slice up your oranges, lemons, and apples. If you have a mandolin, set it up to the thinnest setting to make more consistent slices; Otherwise, just use your knife and slice as thinly as you can.
2. Lay Fruits on Wire Rack

Once they’re all nice and sliced, lay them in rows on your wire rack.
Note: As the fruits shrink a bit after dehydrating them, you can leave a bit of overlap between your fruit slices. Don’t stack them on top of each other too much though, as that will make it take longer for your fruit to dehydrate (which we don't want).
3. Dehydrate Fruits for 6 Hours

Stick your fruit slices in the oven and leave them inside for 6 hours, or until your fruits shrivel and dry up. Flip them over every 30 minutes or so to make sure the oven's evenly dehydrating your fruit slices.
Once your fruit has dried up, take them out of the oven and let cool for a bit.

4. Place Potpourri Ingredients in Zip-Top Bag and Shake

Place your now dehydrated fruit inside a zip-top bag. Add in your bay leaves, cloves, some cinnamon, and a couple of drops of orange essential oil.
Close the zip-top bag and shake thoroughly to make sure the ingredients are evenly mixed.
5. Pour Into Your Chosen Container
Pour your potpourri in a decorative vase or bowl and place it in the room where you want the potpourri smell to be. You can even put them in little bags and give them as Christmas gifts.
The smell of potpourri can last you weeks or even months, but you can add in a few drops of essential oil every few weeks or so to keep it smelling its best.
