What You'll Need:

1. Make an Envelope

Using Cotton Fabric:

Grab a 100% cotton fabric that's 21-22 inches in width and 24 inches in length. Fold it in half, and sew both sides together to create a rectangle with an open top.

Then, create an envelope by sewing the shorter sides and one long side together.

Using a Pillowcase:

Another way to do it is to reuse an old pillowcase. A standard pillowcase might be large enough for a heat pack so you can cut it into half.

Turn it inside out, and measure 12 inches starting from the closed part of the pillowcase. Leave a mark, and cut along that part. It should form an envelope shape.

Keep in mind to fold the edges of the fabric around an inch before sewing the borders. You can use straight pins to keep these folded sides in place.

2. Form Rice Pockets

Measure the length of your rice heating pad, and identify the middle part. Using straight pins, create a line, and mark this halfway point.

Then, divide further the right and left sides, creating three lines and a total of four pockets. Using your machine, sew a straight stitch along these three lines.

Remember that the size of your rice heating pad still depends on your preference. Just keep in mind to avoid creating too large packs as the rice grains will move around freely, creating an uneven heating pad. On the other hand, a size that's too small will result in an overly stiff rice pack.

3. Combine Rice Grains and Essential Oils

In a large bowl, mix your rice grains and essential oils. Ensure that the grains are enough for the size of your rice pockets. You can replace some grains with flax seeds so that the heat would last longer.

If you want your pad to have a pleasantly sweet aroma, try using organic jasmine rice. On the other hand, use brown rice to achieve that earthy effect. You can also add essential oils such as lavender to attain that therapeutic and relaxing vibe.

Add some drops depending on your preferred strength of scent. Stir thoroughly to evenly distribute the oils. Wait for a few minutes.

4. Fill in the Pockets With Rice Grains

Carefully spread the rice grains inside each pocket, and make sure that it's filled with plenty of rice. Afterward, try to stand your rice heating pad to check if the grains are evenly distributed on all pockets.

5. Close Your Rice Heating Pad

Stitch the top to close your heat pack. Use either polyester or cotton thread that's thick and durable. Don't forget that this thread will be visible so you might want to pick a color that's either neutral or would complement the design of your fabric.

6. Enjoy Your Rice Heating Pad

To make your heat pack warm, simply place it in your microwave for around three minutes. Check to avoid burning the rice, as this can lead to a less pleasant smell.

Things To Keep In Mind:

Be careful when getting your heat pack straight from the microwave. You might need to let it cool down before putting directly on your skin.

Now, you can find comfort and relax during the winter season.

What You'll Need:

1. Prepare Your Rice Grains

Mix a few drops of essential oils of your choice together with your rice grains. Aside from lavender, you can also try chamomile and bergamot.

2. Fill in Your Sock With Rice Grains

Put a mason jar lid on the top of your sock to keep it open and in place as you pour the dry and uncooked rice grains. Don't fill it with too much rice. Leave some space for the rice grains to move freely.

Be sure that your sock doesn't have any synthetic materials in it. If you'll put this rice heating pad on your shoulders, use a long sock. You can also use a smaller size to work well for your little ones.

3. Warm Up Your Rice Heating Pad

Close your sock using a ribbon, string, or yarn. Then, put it in your microwave for a minute or two.

It's suggested to add a cup of water inside the microwave to add moisture and to avoid burning your rice heating pad.

4. Use Your Heat Pack

Place your rice heating pad on any part of your body. Use it to treat any aches or to simply warm up your body or your cold beds.
