Learning about the basics of composting is easy, and as part of the basics, you need to know how to make a compost bin first.

DIY Projects for Recycling | How To Make a Compost Bin

There are many types of compost bins out there, but this DIY type of a compost bin is a champ because it doesn't require a lot of tools and materials to make it. If you have wooden pallets lying around, then you're all set for the project. This will also give you a chance to sharpen your woodworking skills. Check out the few things you will only need to complete this project:

Tools:

  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Tape Measure

Supplies:

  • 5 pallets (same size)
  • 4 wooden planks (300 x 15 x 2 cm)
  • Screws
  • Brackets
  • 8 Fixing plates

Steps:

1. Choose a great location.

Choose a location that is sheltered from sun and wind.

2. Attach 2 brackets to each joint.

Position 2 pallets forming a 90-degree angle beside one another.

Attach brackets connecting the pallets at the top and bottom corners. Insert screws into the section of cubic wood between the two slats of the pallets.

3. Place the third pallet.

Place the third pallet beside the second pallet, still forming a 90-degree angle.

4. Form the second compartment.

Screw the fourth pallet in line with the back.

Add the last pallet and put it on the side, then screw it in place.

5. Attach fixing plates.

Attach fixing plates on the back of the bins to keep it together.

6. Add a wooden frame on top.

Add a wooden frame to reinforce the bins and to make them look better. Take the total width, height, and length measurements.

Cut the planks to the desired size and screw them to the edges of the bins.

7. Your compost bin is now ready for your vegetable waste.

Start piling the biodegradable waste for composting.
