The Best Way to Sugar Rim a Glass For Cocktails
If you're hosting a party this year, it's important to add some flair while tending the bar. Don't worry, it doesn't take a mixology degree to dress up drinks just enough to make your guests feel like they're getting the VIP treatment.
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to give your glasses a proper sugar rim (great way to glitz up your Champagne flutes), as well as turn your boring stack of napkins into a spiral wonder. Check out — you won't believe how easy these two tricks are!
What You'll Need:
- Cocktail glass
- A plate
- Citrus fruit
- Sugar
Step 1: Prepare the Rimmming
Fill a plate with some sugar. Make sure the pile of sugar is wider than the rim of the glass.
Step 2: Moistening the Rim
Slice off a wedge of a citrus (lime, lemon, or orange) and cut a thin notch into the flesh of the fruit. Then slip it over the rim of the glass and gently rub it around the entire rim. Make sure the edge is completely moistened.
Step 3: Dipping the Rim
When the rim has been completely moistened, carefully dip the rim of the glass into the sugar – dip it straight and even. Make sure the entire rim is covered by twisting the glass a bit on the plate. Then shake off any loose bits.
And, you’re done! Your glass is now ready to be filled with your favorite cocktail. Just make sure you don't pour near the rim.
Other Bartending Tips: Fanning Cocktail Napkins
Fanning napkins is such a simple, but a cool trick to add some elegance to your table. And, a spiral staircase-like stack of napkins looks so much better than a plain old stack. So, check out this tutorial and learn how to fan your own cocktail napkins.
- Place your stack of napkins on a non-slip surface and make sure it is not too thick.
- Place the shaker or a glass sideways on the stack of napkins.
- Press the shaker down firmly while turning. You will see how the napkins are beginning to spiral.
- Repeat pushing down and turning on the stack until the whole stack spirals around.
- If the napkin on top of the stack has wrinkled up after you’re finished, just turn it over or take it off.
- And you’re done! You have an easy last-minute addition to your table.
