Learn the Proper Steps on How to Paint Baseboards
- 2-inch wide brush
- Painter’s tape
- Clean cloth
- Old newspaper, tarp, drop cloths, or plastic sheets
- Wood filler
Painting a dirty baseboard can mess up your work on the get-go. So it’s very important to use a moist cloth to clean the wood with any dirt or dust. A great tip in doing this is by starting at one corner and work your way around.
After cleaning the baseboard, make sure that you don’t have any big holes from old screws or any noticeable damages. If you see any, use a wood filler to fill it up. Don’t forget to sand the hardened wood filler after.
If you see tiny holes or small nail depressions though, you don’t have to worry. There is no need to fill them up. Painting over it will suffice.
This step is crucial to make this work very neat. Use an old newspaper, tarp, drop cloth, or plastic sheets to cover the ground.
As for the wall, carefully line up painter’s tape to cover it in case your brush goes over the baseboard when painting.
Step 4: Prime the Wood
This step is crucial for painting raw/bare wood. But since we’re talking about repainting, this step will be beneficial to keep a cleaner look. If the old paint is still in great condition, you may skip this step.
If you have to prime the wood, remember to mix the paint well before using it.
Step 5: Start With the Fun Part
After priming the baseboard, it’s time to jump to the fun part of painting it. Again, start from the corner and make your way around. Hold the brush sideways and paint horizontally to keep everything clean and to maximize each stroke.
