How to Make Your Own Sweater Mittens
Don't throw that old sweater away just yet! In just a few steps, you can turn that sweater into the perfect handmade stocking stuffer. (Plus, you won't have to spend a dime!)
This handmade holiday gift is perfect for DIYers on a budget – and all you need is an old sweater plus a needle and thread. Simply turn your sweater inside out, trace your hand onto the fabric, then cut and sew the edges. When you've finished sewing, turn the mitten inside out and try it on for size.

Materials
- An old sweater
- White felt-tip marker
- Scissors
- Crochet thread and needle
1. Flip Your Old Sweater Inside Out
Any sweater will work! Just make sure it's big enough to make two mittens.
2. Trace Your Hands Onto the Sweater
Place one hand on the sweater and trace using a felt tip marker. Don't forget to separate your thumbs when marking.
Tip: Make sure you leave enough fabric for your right mitten!
3. Cut Out the Tracing
Now that you have the outline of your hand, cut it out carefully using your scissors.

4. Use a Crochet Thread to Sew the Mitten
Begin with a backstitch, then sew around the mitten, about 1/4 inch from the edge.
5. Turn the Sweater Mitten Inside Out
Flip the stitched gloves inside out and enjoy your DIY sweater mittens!
Repeat these steps to make a mitten for your right hand.
