The coronavirus pandemic is a very serious matter, no doubt about it. But people look at the fun side of the situation and created ingenious social distancing devices that are silly yet effective.
We are all expected to be in home quarantine to prevent the virus from spreading. However, there are times that we just need to go out to buy groceries or get essential items and we can’t avoid the fact that we have to interact with other people.
Here are some ways people turned this opportunity to funny moments when they created out of this world devices to observe social distancing.
Social Distancing Devices We Found in the Internet You Can DIY

Is someone hitching a ride in your car? Creating a DIY car shield is possible to make sure social distancing is observed even with someone else in the car.
- 1/2 inch PVC pipes
- PVC elbow joints
- PVC T joints
- Plastic wrap
- Sticky tape
Start with the frame. Measure the driver seat of your car. Cut out the pipes depending on how big or small your car is. Make sure it covers the floor to the ceiling and the middle part to separate the driver seat from the passenger seat.
Once you get the measurements, connect the pipes together using the T joints and elbow joints.
Wrap the whole assembly with plastic wrap to separate the driver seat from the rest of the interior of the vehicle.
Note: Make sure you leave space for the middle AC vent for your passengers.
2. PVC Body Doughnut
Some reports say that 6 feet is enough to cover the distance from you and other people. Pretend you’re making a doughnut — a big one and with you inside it.
- 10 pcs. 1/2 inch PVC pipe
- 16 T joints
- 16 45° joints
- 1-inch lashing straps
Cut the PVC pipe into 24 12-inch pieces and 16 5-inch pieces.
Connect the 5-inch pieces to the T joints to form 8 straight pieces. We’ll call them the small pieces.
Do the same to the 12-inch pieces. We’ll call them the long pieces.
Form an octagon using the small pieces with the middle joints facing outward. Use the elbow joints to connect the pieces. Make sure everything is secured tightly.
Do the same with the long pieces but this time, the joints should face inward.
Align the joints of the small octagon with the bigger octagon. Make sure the distance is equal from each other.
Attach the remaining long pieces to connect the joints of the inner assembly to the outer assembly.
Screw the lashing strap to each side of the inner octagon. You will use the straps to wear the device.
3. Hat Disc

Another ingenious idea is to make a headwear extending outward and creating a space to keep other people away from you. It may need a lot of materials but can be a very effective device.
- Bike helmet
- 3-6 ft. of wood strips
- Thin plastic sheet
Create a base from the plywood where you would attach the wood strips. This is where you would attach the helmet as well.
Attach the wood strips to the base as it extends outward.
Attach the thin plastic sheet at the end of the wood strips to create a shield from other people.
4. Giant Body Disc
This idea made it to the news and became a viral and fun social distancing device. Dan Kuhnle of Rockford, Michigan created this fun way of keeping people away from each other and you can make one, too.
- Bungee rope or paracord
- Attachable tent poles
Create the circumference using attachable tent poles. Connect the poles to each other and form a circle using them
Stay in the middle of the big circle and attach the paracord or bungee rope from at least 6 sides. Make sure the ropes are tied up exactly opposite from each other to make it balance.
Note: Just like how Dan did it in the video, just put the cords on top of your shoulders when walking with this device.

As much as possible, don’t go out if you don’t really have to. Practicing extreme care during this crisis is very important. But if you need to go out for some chores, always practice social distancing. Try out these devices if you want.
