How to Make a Mermaid Tail Blanket
My daughter has always wanted to be a mermaid. Ever since she saw The Little Mermaid, that's all she can ever talk about. It has been years now but I'm sure deep inside, based on her room decors, there's still a little mermaid in her. So to give her a pleasant surprise, I'm making her a mermaid tail blanket! If you've always dreamt of being a mermaid or knows someone who has, this is a quick and easy sewing project you can make in a flash!
How to Make a Mermaid Tail Blanket
What you'll need to make a mermaid tail blanket:
- fleece cloth or any thick fabric
- contrasting fabric (for the tail)
- newspaper
- scissors
- pins
- sewing machine
Step 1
Lay the fleece fabric out in a flat surface and take the measurements. Draw your mermaid tail pattern.
Step 2
Fold the fabric in half and start cutting. Make sure you have enough allowance on the side since you'll be sewing the edges. You should have two pieces of mermaid tail shaped fabric after.

Step 3
With your newspaper, make a fin pattern and pin it on the contrasting fabric. Make two of them and cut another one from your fleece fabric or any scrap fabric to make your tail fin thicker and sturdier.
Step 4
Time to sew the fins! Start by pinning the two contrasting fabric together with the right sides facing then place extra fin piece. Sew around the edges.
Step 5
Once you're done sewing, trim excess seam allowance so you can easily turn it right-side out.
TIP: Make your fin look more realistic by sewing some lines on both fins!
Step 6
Sew around the edge of the fleece fabric but be sure to leave a gap at the bottom. This is where you'll be adding the tail fin.
Step 7
To attach the tail fin, stuff it in the bottom gap. Connect the top of the tail fin to the hole at the bottom of the tail and start sewing.
Step 8
Turn the blanket right-side out and sew a hem at the top of your blanket about 2 inches in length. And… done!
Wasn't that easy? Take it to bed and start dreaming like a mermaid!
