Lesson 5 – How to Cut Fabric

Cutting fabric is a bit trickier than you may have thought. There is indeed a right and wrong way to cut fabric. Below you will learn the basics to fabric cutting, and why it is so important to take your time and follow the grain line. Follow along with the video. The most important thing to keep in mind here is to ALWAYS use the right tools!!! You will want to use nice and sharp fabric shears, or a rotary blade. That’s it! There are no exceptions! Never use craft scissors for cutting fabric, vis versa – never use fabric shears for anything but fabric! This is very important to keep your fabric scissors in perfect working condition.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • When to use your different scissors
  • How to prepare the fabric for cutting
  • How to cut fabric on the grain
  • How to cut fabric on the fold
  • How to cut fabric on the bias

Here’s our sample fabric, to remind you of the warp, the weft, and the bias.
