Oh happy day! Ready for a little DIY? Do you enjoy painting? Well, then today is your lucky day. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to add a little color to a space in an unexpected way, don’t you think? A lot of the time we tend to think the only way we can add color to our spaces is through painting the walls, wall art, pillows and throws. Guess what? Not the case!

In the kitchen, how about adding a little color with something as simple as DIY painted utensils. You can choose any color and have a lot of fun with this project. It’s amazing what a little painter’s tape and acrylic paint can do. Woo-hoo! Ready to get to work?

Before getting started, let’s grab some supplies:

  • Wooden utensils
  • Painter’s tape
  • Acrylic paint (in colors of your choice)
  • Brushes (sponge and bristle)
  • Dishwasher-safe Mod Podge, optional (but encouraged!)

Step 1:

Apply painter’s tape to your utensils in the design of your choice. I purchased my utensils at World Market and ConsumerCrafts.com. As far as the design, you’ll primarily choose between stripes and/or solids. That will depend on your preference, but don’t be afraid to have a little fun!

Step 2:

Grab your paint and brush; it’s time to do a little painting! Apply one coat. Allow drying time and apply an additional coat or two.

Step 3:

Carefully remove the painter’s tape. Don’t worry if you have to do a little “touching up.” It happens to the best of us {wink}.

Step 4:

Apply a couple coats of dishwasher-safe Mod Podge using a bristle brush (be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle). Please note that this step is optional; however, it will allow more durability. Without the Mod Podge, you’ll definitely want to hand-wash your utensils.

That’s it! Add them to a glass jar or container and voila! What do you think? Pretty great, right? I love how they add a slight pop of color, but they’re still a functional part of the kitchen!

What colors would you use? I think these would make a great housewarming gift paired with a couple of kitchen towels too! You can’t beat a thoughtful handmade gift.

There you have it! What other creative ways would you add a little color to your kitchen? Let us know below in the comments!
