These DIY beauty products will make you look and feel your best — without breaking the bank.
Must-try Beauty Recipes
Beauty products don’t have to cost a fortune. Many that advertise anti-aging benefits get those benefits from natural ingredients that you probably already have! Instead of spending a ton of money to buy them, try making a few at home. You’d be surprised at how effective they are.
6 DIY Beauty Products That Will Make You Look & Feel Younger
1. Gelatin Hair Mask
The benefit to a gelatin hair mask lies in the keratin, which protects epithelial cells, where hair comes from. Products containing keratin, like gelatin does, do wonders for hair. This is especially true for older hair, which tends to get dry and brittle from years of heat, products, dye and styling.
1 Tbsp. gelatin
1/3 cup water
1-2 tsp. Apple Cider Vinegar
1-2 tsp. honey (optional)
Add the water to a saucepan, then sprinkle the gelatin on top. Leave it alone for about 5 minutes to let the gelatin bloom. Then turn on the heat and whisk it a bit until the gelatin dissolves. Once the gelatin has dissolved, take the pan off the heat and add the apple cider vinegar and honey if you’re using it. Once it’s cool enough, work it into your hair. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it out, shampoo and condition as normal.
2. Avocado Face Mask
Dry skin is no one’s friend, and it seems like it only gets worse the older we get. If you’re looking for an easy, effective method to pack in some moisture, this will do the trick.
¼ cup honey
1 ripe banana (optional)
Mash the avocado up as well as you can and add in the honey. If you want a very smooth application, just put the ingredients in the food processor and blend it up. I like to add the banana because it helps hydrate, and it’s also full of antioxidants and potassium to keep skin looking younger. Plus, it makes it taste better when you eat the leftovers!
3. Cinnamon Sugar Lip Scrub
Chapped lips are unsightly, painful and annoying. Of course, they’re also par for the course in winter. This cinnamon sugar lip scrub is an easy, delicious, gentle way to exfoliate regularly.
4 Tbsp. brown sugar
1 Tbsp. coconut oil
1 Tbsp. honey
1 tsp. cinnamon
Combine all ingredients and mix until it’s evenly incorporated. Store it in an airtight container. To use, rub a small amount over your lips for about 30-60 seconds. Wipe (or lick!) off.
4. Simple Coconut Oil Hair Mask
Dry, brittle hair is prone to breakage. While the gelatin mask is good for building strength, you might need something to pack in some moisture as well.
2-4 Tbsp. Coconut Oil (depending on hair length)
5/10 drops essential oils
Just mix the two together and apply it to your hair. Focus the majority of it on the shafts. Leave it on for 30-60 minutes. Wash out. If you’re having trouble getting all the oil out, one egg mixed with a bit of castile soap should remove it without damaging your hair.
5. Rosewater Toner
Rose water toner is amazing for a splash of hydration throughout the day. It keeps skin dewy and fresh-looking, minimizes under-eye circles, and it smells amazing. The professional stuff tends to be a bit pricy, but you can make your own for much cheaper!
Roses – however many you like!
Enough water to cover the roses
Pluck the petals off the roses and rinse them well to remove any debris. Place them in a large pot and add the water – just enough to cover them. Cover the pot, turn up the heat to medium-low and let it come to a simmer. Keep simmering for 20-30 minutes, or until the petals have lost most of their color and are pale pink. Then strain the petals out, let the water cool, pour it into an airtight container and you’re done!
6. Skin Brightening Coffee Scrub
Struggling to find a youthful glow doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg. The caffeine in coffee is actually a very simple, inexpensive way to make your skin look younger. Its antioxidants protect skin from the free radicals that damage and age us, making this a perfect anti-aging scrub.
1 tsp. coconut oil
1 tsp. finely ground coffee
Mix until well incorporated. Use a small amount to scrub your face. The rest you can pack up and store in an airtight container. If it’s hot, portion it out and pop it in the freezer for a perfect hot weather pick-me-up!
These six simple recipes should work wonders for your skin. Try a few out and enjoy your new, youthful glow!
