When John Ivers retired, he wanted a project to entertain his grandchildren. His solution has attracted visitors from across the globe: his very own backyard roller coaster!
“I just had an idea and I had my A-Frame shed here and I thought, man, that would make a good lift hill,” explains Ivers, who lives in Bruceville, Indiana. “So I just started on it. I built a 10-foot section and kept going from there, one section at a time, and built the Blue Flash.
Ivers employed his three decades of factory welding experience, and worked for a year and a half on the coaster. The Blue Flash not only travels up the side of the shed, it also features one full loop. According to this YouTube clip, Ivers tested the loop himself when the track led to nothing but grass. His (literal) leap of faith paid off. The Blue Flash now attracts visitors from around the world.
Because the Blue Flash is a “big kid's coaster,” Ivers created its kiddie sidekick Blue Too for his grand kids.
“They love it,” he says, “I know they do.” Talk about a rad grandpa!
