DIY Star Wars Lightsaber Straws For Less Than A $1

The new Star Wars: Episode 7 has awakened (pun intended) an extensively dormant love of the popular space opera in both children and adults alike all across the globe. After shattering a number of box-office records it's no surprise that you can't turn on the television, browse the internet or go shopping without seeing something Star Wars-related, even weeks after its initial release.

If you (or your kids) are still geeking out about the sc-fi film, get it on the fun by building your own Star Wars lightsabers, for less than a $1 each. Check out the full tutorial, from Instructables' user EricMason, below.

What You Need:

Materials

  • finger lights (two for each lightsaber: one to form the base, the other for the cap at the end of the straw)
  • milkshake straws
  • black electrical tape
  • super glue
  • sheet of acetate
  • scrap of white or reflective paper
  • paint (in lightsaber colors)

Tools

  • scissors
  • small paintbrush

Instructions:

1. Start by trimming the acetate just a tiny bit shorter than the straw and a few inches wide. Roll the acetate and slide it into the straw.

2. At the bottom of the straw, glue the finger light and let it sit for a bit while the hold strengthens.

3. Now cut a small circle of white or reflective paper to fill the hole of an extra cap, which you can get from another finger light. Glue this cap on the other side of straw. Paint this paper with a bit of paint so that in blends in with the rest of the lightsaber.

4. Grab the black electrical tape and place small strips over the finger light and the bottom of the straw to help everything stay in place. Make sure not to block the movement of the switch on the finger light.

5. Add other strips of different colored tape to decorate the straws. You can also add add pieces of other straws to make different types of lightsabers, such as the cross one.

6. When you're finished, light 'em up!
