DIY Dry Shampoo Recipes For Your Hair Color and Type

1. Black Hair: Arrowwood and Activated Charcoal

For the ravenheads out there, mix an arrowroot base with some activated charcoal to keep your jet black mane as fresh as ever. The base absorbs all the excess grease from your hair, while the activated charcoal preserves your hair’s color and helps the dry shampoo blend in.

2. Dark Brown Hair: Arrowwood, Cocoa Powder, and Activated Charcoal

Brunettes on the darker side of the spectrum can opt for a mix of the arrowroot base with some cocoa powder for a dry shampoo mix that closely matches your brown locks. If you have darker hair, slowly add some activated charcoal until the powder mixture closely matches your hair color.

Since the cocoa powder’s smell will overpower everything else, you may want to skip the essential oils for this concoction.

3. Medium Brown Hair: Arrowwood and Cocoa Powder

Those with medium brown hair can skip the activated charcoal and add more cocoa powder to your mix.

4. Auburn Hair: Arrowwood, Cocoa Powder, and Cinnamon

A hint of red in the form of cinnamon goes a long way for those with auburn locks. Add a little of the coloring powders at a time until your reach the desired shade.

5. Red Hair: Arrowwood and Cinnamon

Cinnamon’s reddish hue makes it the perfect shade for a redhead-friendly dry shampoo. If the end result turns out to be too red, add a small amount of cocoa powder until you get a close match.

6. Gray or Silver Hair: Arrowwood and Bentonite Clay

Silver foxes will benefit from adding a touch of bentonite clay to your DIY dry shampoo base. If your hair is more of a salt and pepper shade, add in some activated charcoal to the mix.

7. Blonde Hair: Arrowroot and Bentonite Clay or Cinnamon (depending on undertone)

If you have blonde hair, combine some arrowroot powder with a few drops of your chosen essential oils. Apply this powder mixture to your roots using a fluffy brush (a kabuki brush works well for this purpose) and gently massage your scalp to work the dry shampoo in.

Strawberry blondes can add in a small amount of cinnamon, while platinum blondes should add in some bentonite clay for a bluish hue.

8. Colored Hair: Stick with the Arrowroot Powder

Stick with the arrowroot powder base if you have vivid hair colors. Adding in additional powders can dull your hair color and cause your hair to stain.

9. No Arrowroot Powder? Use Cornstarch Instead

You can use cornstarch base as a substitute if you don’t have arrowroot powder on hand and it will work just as well. Its absorbent qualities remove excess oil from your scalp and give you more time in between washes.

10. For Greasy Hair: Consider a Spray-Type Dry Shampoo

If you’re hair’s prone to becoming extremely greasy, dissolve 2 tablespoons of arrowroot or cornstarch in 1/2 cup water and 2 tablespoons of vodka. Shake well and pour in a spray bottle for a quick spritz.
