How to Sew Reusable Cotton Rounds and Save Your Scraps
Materials:
- 100% cotton fabric (for the outer layer)
- T-shirt/jersey fabric (for the inner layer)
- Fabric scissors
- Pen or pencil
- A round object (like a glass or mug)
- Sewing machine or sewing supplies
- Sewing pins
Step 1. Trace and Cut
Trace the outline using a drinking glass or go for a compass to draw the circles. Then cut, following the traced circles on the fabric.
Step 2. Match the Circles Up
Take two pieces of each fabric and make a sandwich out of them using the t-shirt or jersey fabric as the inner layer and the cotton fabric as the outer layers. Secure them together using your pins.
Note: If you’re using a patterned fabric, make sure the patterned sides are visible on both sides of the pair.
Step 3. Sew the Fabric Together
Sew your cotton pieces together using the method of your choice. You can choose between using your sewing machine, or doing some hand-stitching.
- Sewing machine method: Use an overcast foot to be able to make stitches close to the edge for a clean, polished look. If you don't have one, you can use a running stitch.
- Hand-sewing method: Use a running stitch around the edge. If you want something fancier and more durable, use a blanket stitch around the outer edge.

You can place these cotton rounds in the wash at 30-40 degrees along with your other clothes. Just make sure to use a laundry bag to ensure that they don’t get lost in the tumble.
