How to Build a Homemade Bird Feeder
Making homemade bird feeder for your backyard is a great activity to get the kids outside and loving nature. It's so much fun to sit back and enjoy the value of bringing the nature to your family by making a simple bird feeder out of items from around your house. This is really a perfect craft to try with your entire family to enjoy the beauty of nature. Happy Crafting!
Here's what you need:
Materials:
Sports drink old water bottle
2 Jar lids
An eye bolt
Chopsticks
Tools:
Drill
Craft knife
Glue gun
Step 1: Drill A Hole into the Bottle Top
Drill a hole into the center of your bottle top and one of your jar lids.
Step 2: Drill Two Holes on the Opposite Sides
Next drill two holes on opposite sides of your bottle about 2 inches from the bottom. These will be our feeder openings so the birds can get the seeds.
Step 3: Drill Smaller Openings
Just below those two larger holes, drill two smaller openings.
Step 4: Make a Perch
Then grab one of your chopsticks and insert it into the bottom two holes of your water bottle. This is going to be the perch for our birds to stand on while they feed out of the top holes.
Tip: Make sure your feeder holes don't have any rough edges. Use a craft knife and a little sandpaper to smooth things out.
Step 5: Trimming Jar Lid
Trim your jar lid in your bottle cap onto the eyebolt. Be sure to secure it with a metal knot and then twist it back onto your bottle.
Step 6: Putting a Hot Glue
Hot glue the bottom of your bottle to the inside of another jar lid. This will catch the overflow of seeds and provide another place for our feathered friends to rest.
Step 7: Fill Your Feeder
All that's left to do is fill your feeder with some seed, string it out with some twine and wait for those birds.
Tip: The feeder should be high enough off the ground to keep of cats and squirrels. Be sure to pick a spot by a window where the scene can be enjoyed from inside your home.
