How to Make a Romantic DIY Bed Canopy | Bedroom Decorating Ideas

If you want to add a little coziness and romance to your bedroom, this DIY project is for you. This homemade bed canopy is not only an easy bedroom decor idea, it adds a great focal point and adds a wisp of dreaminess to a boring bedroom.

Adding an elegant and beautiful bed canopy is definitely something you should try to make as your next DIY project this weekend! So let’s get to work and be creative! It’s time to give your bed a romantic canopy.

You’ll need the following materials for this DIY bed canopy:

  • 8 yards of lacy or sheer fabric (any color that suits your taste is fine)
  • 2 x 1” thick wooden dowels
  • 4 x 1.5” wooden plates
  • 4 x screw on hooks
  • Anchors (you only need the plastic inserts and make sure these anchors match the thickness of your hook screws)
  • 3 yards of ribbons
  • Some pins, needle and matching white thread

Step 1

First, determine where you want your canopy to hang. Measure out 4 holes evenly spaced apart for the 2 sets of hooks you’ll be using on each wooden dowel. For this particular project, it measured about 10 inches on the edges of the bed and 12 inches from the wall. The 2nd set from the wall measured 32 inches.

Step 2

Next, drill holes into the ceiling with the appropriately sized bit and press in your anchors, then you can screw in the hooks.

Step 3

It’s time to mock up the canopy bed.  Start by tying some ribbon to the hooks that you screwed in earlier.  You only need one for each side of the bed.

Step 4

Drape the uncut fabric into the ribbon on both ends.  Center the fabric, so that you have an even length on both sides.  If you want a bit of slack in the middle, adjust as needed.  Finally, adjust the length on both sides until you get the look you want.

Step 5

Cut off the excess fabric.

Step 6

Take the dowels and place each into the wrong side of the fabric then fold the fabric over each dowel. Hand sew in the fabric together closely to the rod using the thread and needle to make a pocket.

Step 7

You can paint the wood plates silver or you can leave it as is. To give your canopy bed a finished look, glue the wood plates to each end of the rod.

Step 8

Cut two 30 inch lengths of ribbon. Look for the middle then tie them to each ends of the rod in a simple knot.  Next, tie the loose ends of the ribbon together with a square knot.

Step 9

Hang up your DIY canopy and take a nap under your newly added, dreamy decor!

Voila!

You have just finished making your romantic bed canopy! You’ll love waking up to this beautiful and relaxing bedroom.

We hope you enjoyed this gorgeous DIY project.
