Winter is around the corner and with the temperature dropping, we need to battle frozen glasses or driveways with a homemade deicer. The good news is most of these items are easily available in your kitchen.
Effective Homemade Deicer Products To Battle The Freezing Weather
Salt is one of the most effective homemade deicers that even the government uses to remove the ice from our streets. To use it, simply sprinkle a fair amount on icy surfaces evenly. This will cause a reaction that will lower the freezing point of ice.
Unlike salt, baking soda contains a smaller amount of alkaline but still contains sodium that can still lower the freezing point of ice. Use it on frozen surfaces just like how you would do with salt.
Baking soda is less harmful to grass and plants, and not too much to damage concrete as salt would.
Alcohol has a lower freezing point than water and can easily unfreeze ice. Mix one ounce of isopropyl alcohol with one quart of warm water and 5 to 10 drops of liquid dishwashing soap in a spray bottle.
After you use it for gardening, it’s time to let fertilizers help you with your winter problems. Ammonium sulfate, alfalfa meal, and urea are commonly found in commercial fertilizers. These components help to melt ice.
Just keep in mind to not overuse it as it can be harmful to plants.

5. White Vinegar and Water
Similar to salt, vinegar contains acetic acid that lowers the freezing point of water. To use this homemade deicer, simply mix one part of each in a spray bottle and apply it to freezing surfaces.
Ever wonder why ice melts fast on sweet drinks? Sugar interferes with the water molecules on ice resulting in faster melting. To put it in a very simple way, it lowers the freezing temperature just like how salt does.
7. Sugar Beet Juice
Mixing beet juice with salt brine is so effective that the coldest places in Canada use this on their streets. To make your own homemade deicer with sugar beet juice, add and dissolve 1 ½ cups of salt to it, and add in a gallon of water.
